Loctite 222 threadlockers — Description
LOCTITE® 222 is a low-strength, purple anaerobic threadlocking adhesive specially formulated for applications requiring easy disassembly with standard hand tools. Unlike medium or high-strength threadlockers, Loctite 222 low strength thread lock is the engineer's choice for set screws, small-diameter fasteners, and long engagement length threads — where preventing screw shearing during removal is critical.
This single-component dimethacrylate ester cures anaerobically in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces. Its thixotropic, low-viscosity formula reduces liquid migration after application while still providing reliable resistance to loosening from shock and vibration.
Key Features & Benefits
- Low strength, easy disassembly – removable with standard hand tools, no shearing risk
- Ideal for set screws – precise adjustment without damaging fine threads
- Suited to small diameter and long engagement fasteners
- Thixotropic, low-viscosity formula – minimal migration after application
- UV fluorescent purple liquid – easy visual identification
- Breakaway torque of just 6 N·m on M10 steel – gentle, controlled locking
- Compressive shear strength ≥2.5 N/mm² (≥360 psi)
- Compatible with steel, brass, zinc dichromate, and stainless steel substrates
- Chemical resistant to motor oil, leaded petrol, brake fluid, acetone, and ethanol
Common Applications
Loctite 222 low-strength threadlocker is the right choice for:
- Set screw locking in precision machinery and instrumentation
- Small diameter fasteners prone to shearing during disassembly
- Long engagement length threaded fasteners
- Applications needing frequent maintenance access to fasteners
- Adjustment mechanisms in calibration and precision equipment
How to Use Loctite 222
- Clean all surfaces with Loctite cleaning solvent and allow to dry.
- For inactive metals or slow cure, spray threads with Activator SF 7471™ or SF 7649™.
- Shake the product thoroughly before use.
- For thru holes: apply drops onto the bolt at the nut engagement area.
- For blind holes: apply drops down the internal threads to the bottom of the hole.
- Assemble and tighten as required.
- For disassembly: standard hand tools; in rare cases of excessive engagement, heat to ~250°C.
