Loctite 246 Threadlocker — Description
Loctite 246 is a medium-strength, blue anaerobic threadlocking adhesive engineered for heavy-duty applications requiring both vibration resistance and elevated temperature performance. Unlike standard medium-strength threadlockers, Loctite 246 blue thread locker maintains its locking performance after prolonged exposure to temperatures up to 200°C (and partially to 260°C), making it ideal for transmissions, construction equipment, and railroad assemblies.
This single-component dimethacrylate ester requires no mixing and cures in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces. Loctite 246 is particularly suitable for heavy-duty assemblies where resistance to heavy shock, vibration, and elevated temperatures is required simultaneously.
Key Features & Benefits
- High-temperature medium strength – retains function to 200°C+
- Normal disassembly with standard hand tools (pre-torque conditions)
- Heavy-duty vibration resistance – suitable for transmissions and railroad equipment
- Blue thixotropic liquid – easy application and visual identification
- UV fluorescent – post-assembly inspection under UV light
- Breakaway torque of 15–24 N·m on M10 black oxide steel (pre-torqued, 24h)
- After 72h @ 204°C: still maintains ≥5.7 N·m breakaway torque
- Chemical resistant – motor oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, water/glycol, ethanol, acetone
- Disassembly with localised heat to ~250°C for extreme engagement lengths
- Compatible with steel, zinc dichromate, zinc phosphate, stainless steel substrates
Common Applications
Loctite 246 blue threadlocker is the right choice for:
- Transmissions and gearboxes – bolts and studs requiring normal disassembly
- Construction equipment fasteners subject to heavy shock and vibration
- Railroad and rolling stock assembly bolts
- Fasteners exposed to elevated operating temperatures (up to 200°C+)
- Automotive and heavy vehicle drivetrain fasteners
- Industrial equipment requiring high-temperature vibration resistance
How to Use Loctite 246
- Clean all surfaces (external and internal) with Loctite cleaning solvent and allow to dry.
- For inactive metals or slow cure, spray with Activator 7471™ or 7649™.
- Shake product thoroughly before use.
- For thru holes: apply several drops onto the bolt at the nut engagement area.
- For blind holes: apply drops down the internal threads to the bottom of the hole.
- Assemble and tighten as required.
- For disassembly: standard hand tools in most cases; for extreme lengths, heat to ~250°C.
