LOCTITE 480 instant adhesive — Description
LOCTITE® 480 is a rubber-toughened cyanoacrylate instant adhesive engineered for applications requiring increased flexibility, superior peel strength, and enhanced resistance to shock. Where standard super glues become brittle under impact or vibration, Loctite 480 rubber toughened adhesive maintains bond integrity — making it ideal for dynamic assemblies across metal, plastic, and rubber substrates.
This ethyl cyanoacrylate, humidity-curing adhesive is a black, low-viscosity liquid that cures rapidly on exposure to atmospheric moisture. With a glass transition temperature of 150°C, Loctite 480 offers genuinely robust thermal and mechanical performance compared to standard instant adhesives.
Key Features & Benefits
- Rubber toughened – significantly improved peel strength and impact resistance
- High flexibility – resists cracking under shock and vibration loads
- Fast curing – fixture times as low as <20 seconds on rubber substrates
- Versatile bonding – metals, plastics (ABS, PVC, polycarbonate), and rubbers (neoprene, nitrile)
- NSF 61 compatible – with 48-hour cure at 23°C for water-contact applications
- Lap shear strength on grit-blasted steel: 22–30 N/mm² (3,200–4,400 psi)
- Maintains ≥18 N/mm² lap shear strength even after 48 hours at 120°C
- Excellent heat aging performance – minimal strength loss at 80°C over 5,000 hours
- High dielectric breakdown strength of 25 kV/mm for electrical applications
Common Applications
Loctite 480 rubber-toughened instant adhesive is the preferred choice for:
- Shock and vibration-prone assemblies in automotive and industrial equipment
- Bonding rubber components (neoprene, nitrile) to metal or plastic housings
- Applications requiring high peel strength, not just shear strength
- Electronic component bonding where dielectric properties matter
- Assemblies needing resistance to heat aging and thermal cycling
How to Use Loctite 480
- Ensure bond surfaces are clean and free from grease.
- This product performs best in thin bond gaps (0.05 mm).
- Apply to one surface and assemble parts promptly — cure is rapid on most substrates.
- Excess adhesive can be removed with Loctite cleanup solvents, nitromethane, or acetone.
