Loctite 609 Retaining Compound — Description
LOCTITE 609 is a high-strength, low-viscosity anaerobic retaining compound engineered for bonding cylindrical fitting parts, with particular suitability for fine-clearance assemblies such as rotors in fractional and subfractional horsepower motors. This green, UV-fluorescing acrylic methacrylate retainer combines high bond strength with a thin, fast-wicking formula that flows readily into tight cylindrical fits.
Key Features
LOCTITE 609's low viscosity is its defining advantage — where other retaining compounds need higher viscosity to bridge gaps, LOCTITE 609 is formulated to penetrate very tight clearances quickly and completely, making it ideal for precision-fit components. It carries military qualification under Mil-R-46082B and meets ASTM D5363 general and detail requirements for North American production, providing documented quality assurance for OEM specification work. UV fluorescence allows fast visual verification of adhesive presence and coverage during assembly inspection.
Performance Data
LOCTITE 609 reaches compressive shear strength of ≥10.3 N/mm² after just 1 hour of cure at 22°C, accelerating to ≥15.8 N/mm² after 24 hours — among the fastest fixturing speeds in the retaining compound category, which is valuable for high-throughput motor and component assembly lines. The product retains strength well through heat aging at 120°C and 150°C across thousands of hours, and shows excellent chemical resistance to motor oil, gasoline, brake fluid, and ethanol, with minor reduction in acetone resistance over 1,000 hours. Cure speed is fastest on steel substrates, moderate on aluminum, and slower on zinc dichromate, with activator application closing much of that gap.
Applications
LOCTITE 609 retaining compound is the established standard for rotor-to-shaft retention in fractional and subfractional horsepower electric motors, as well as locking bushings and sleeves into housings on shafts. It's also used to augment press fits, adding mechanical reliability to interference-fit assemblies that might otherwise loosen under vibration or thermal cycling. Typical industries include electric motor manufacturing, appliance production, HVAC equipment, and precision rotating machinery.
Directions for Use
Clean and dry all bonding surfaces with a LOCTITE cleaning solvent before use. Apply Activator 7471 or 7649 on inactive metals or where faster cure is needed, and shake the product thoroughly before dispensing. For slip-fitted assemblies, apply around the leading edge of the pin and inside the collar using a rotating motion. For press-fitted assemblies, coat both surfaces and assemble at high press-on rates. For shrink-fitted assemblies, coat the pin and heat the collar for clearance. Allow parts to remain undisturbed until sufficient handling strength develops. Disassembly requires localized heating to approximately 250°C, followed by mechanical abrasion and solvent soak for residue cleanup.
