LOCTITE 680 retaining compound — Description
LOCTITE® 680 is a high-strength, medium-viscosity green anaerobic retaining compound designed for bonding cylindrical fitting parts, particularly where lower viscosity is needed for easier application and better gap filling. Loctite 680 retaining adhesive cures in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces, preventing loosening and leakage caused by shock and vibration.
This methacrylate ester anaerobic adhesive works on both active metals (mild steel) and passive substrates including stainless steel and plated surfaces. Loctite 680 offers excellent high-temperature performance, oil contamination tolerance, and is NSF/ANSI Standard 61 certified for use in potable water systems up to 82°C.
Key Features & Benefits
- High strength retaining – compressive shear strength of 26 N/mm² (3,740 psi) on steel after 7 days
- NSF/ANSI Standard 61 certified – approved for potable water system components
- Rapid high-temperature cure – ≥24.1 N/mm² (3,500 psi) achieved in just 1 hour at 93°C
- Works on passive substrates – stainless steel achieves 28 N/mm² (4,030 psi)
- Oil contamination tolerant – cures through cutting, lubrication, and protection fluids
- Cold strength tested to –75°C (-100°F)
- Heat aging performance maintained through 200°C exposure
- Chemical resistant to motor oil, brake fluid, water/glycol, sodium hydroxide, and phosphoric acid
- Compatible with Activator SF 7471™, SF 7649™, and SF 7091™ for faster cure
Common Applications
Loctite 680 high-strength retaining compound is used for:
- Retaining bearings, bushings, and sleeves into housings
- Potable water system component assembly (NSF 61 compliant)
- Locking gears, pulleys, and shafts in industrial machinery
- Applications requiring bonding on stainless steel and plated parts
- High-temperature assemblies in automotive and process equipment
How to Use Loctite 680
- Clean all surfaces with Loctite cleaning solvent and allow to dry.
- To accelerate cure speed or for large gaps, apply activator and allow to dry.
- For slip fits: apply adhesive around the leading edge of the pin and inside the collar; use a rotating motion for coverage.
- For press fits: apply adhesive thoroughly to both surfaces; assemble at high press-on rates.
- For shrink fits: coat the part to be cooled or heated as appropriate; avoid condensation on cooled parts.
- Do not disturb parts until handling strength is achieved.
- For disassembly: standard hand tools, or localised heat to ~250°C if needed.
